Red-eared Slider Turtles

Turtles have been inhabiting the earth for more than 150 million years. They were already here way earlier than humans.Today, some species of turtles have now reached to an endangered status and is now on a threatened state to be extinct.

The turtles in Cebu Zoo is the Red-eared slider. They are the most popular pet turtle in the world. The Red-eared sliders got their name from the distinctive red patch of skin around their ears and their ability to slide off rocks and into the water quickly.

Females of this reptile are larger than the males. They grow up to 13 inches in length while males grow only up to 10 inches. However, the tail of the males is much longer and thicker with claws being elongated to have a better grip on the female's carapace during mating. They sexually mature at 5 years of age.

Scientifically called Trachemys scripta elegans, the Red-eared sliders are invasive species. They are omnivore in nature and eat both plants and animals on their habitat which includes fishes, tadpoles, snails, crickets, worms and both land and aquatic plants.

The recorded mating season for the red-eared slider turtles occurs between the months of March and July.During mating time, courtship of this reptile will take up to an hour and the intercourse would approximately take up to 15 minutes. Females do not eat much after mating and lays up to 30 eggs per clutch. They can lay up to 5 clutches per year.

Cebu Zoo And Its History

Cebu Zoo -the original zoo in the Queen City of the South was made possible through the creative ideas and conception by one of Cebu's official in the name of Raymundo Crystal. Crystal perceived the idea to have an official zoo in the city of Cebu in the 50's. A venue of the zoo was not still realized until the Cebu provincial government headed by governor Francisco Remotigue donated lot 1298 of Barangay Kalunasan,Cebu City with an area 222,110 square meters to the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) on October 14, 1963. It was only on 1969 that the Cebu provincial government under Governor Espina set aside a portion of this land (which is situated above the Beverly Hills Residential area at the top of the Capitol Hills) with an area of 70,000 square meters or 7 hectares for a city zoo.
Fr. Eleuterio J. Tropa
When the concrete idea of the city zoo was established, the development of the Cebu Zoo began in 1973. After the finishing touches of the zoo came to pass, it was entrusted to Fr. Eleuterio Tropa who was known to be a long-haired priest which always carry a large python snake and walks barefooted. Fr. Tropa leans on his founded Lamplighters Foundation for the sustenance of the Zoo. He got the nod of the government to handle the city zoo due to his love of animals and his expertise of being a zoo keeper.

Before his life in Cebu Zoo, he ran a zoo in Zamboangita, Negros Oriental before moving to Cebu. He also ran and opened a zoo in Talisay City, Cebu. The zoo was later transferred to Fort San Pedro which gave added excitement and color to the city landmark in the 1970's. Fr. Tropa, continued to serve and maintain Cebu Zoo for a score of years until his death in 1993. After his departure, the Cebu Zoo's management was passed to the Cebu City authorities in which the later entrusted the city zoo to the Philippine Wetlands and Wildlife Foundation Inc. (PWFC) who, on that time hadn't had animal husbandry experience.

Rebuilding Cebu Zoo
After Fr. Tropa passed away, Cebu Zoo experienced trials. The existing animal pens and cages continues to deteriorate which later was unsuited on the animals contained. Financial challenges also began to take toll as entrance fee income gradually declines and sources of funding became scarce. Food sources and animal care were dependent on gate income. It was on 1997 when Quantum Conservation shed light on Cebu Zoo when new cages were built by the conceived idea of William Oliver of Fauna and Flora International (fauna-flora.org/). The help and support of city officials and concerned citizens through their donations rebuilt and stabilized the new Cebu Zoo.

The current day Cebu Zoo already had central hundred-step concrete staircase with the inter-connecting terraces and an excavated road to facilitate movement around the place. This architecture gives limitless potential to put various well known species of animals and other zoo related activities especially to tourists and school children.

In the bottom part of the zoo, you can find a Bengal Tiger on its cage which was donated by an American National to the present zoo manager,Giovanni Stephen Romarate, son of Victor Romarate which also was a close friend of Fr. Eleuterio Tropa.

Philippine Brown Deer

The Philippine Brown Deer is also an attraction in Cebu Zoo. Scientifically called Rusa Marianna (was called Cervus Mariannus before), this deer is endemic in the Philippines a few decades ago an has now been introduced to Guam, Micronesia and the Northern Mariana Islands.

A Philippine Brown Deer
Also known as the Philippine Deer, this deer is listed as (DD) or Data Deficient on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) in 1996 due to insufficient and inadequate information for the conservation status.

It was later justified that the species of this deer is listed as Vulnerable because of population decline due to illegal hunting, habitat destruction and degradation and over-exploitation.

Philippine Brown Deers are relatively smaller than the deers found in Africa and America. Females or Does is relatively smaller than Males. A bull or the male of this animal can weigh up to 50 kilograms and their horns are also shorter than other deer species as it only measures from 7 to 15 inches. The whole coat on their body is covered brown except for their tail which has a distinctive white color.

The Philippine Brown Deer can be found on grasslands on mountain tops typically above 2,000 meters from sea level and on areas near edges of forests near to a stream or a river bank. Being nocturnal, it does its activity during night until dawn. It feeds on a variety of vegetation along with grasses, berries and fallen fruits on the ground.
Philippine Brown Deers usually mates between the months of September and January. During this period, the Females form a small group and the males remain in solitude. Gestation period for the Philippine Brown deer reach up to 8 months.During the birth the fawns (young deer) has visible white spots on its body which will eventually disapper in weeks.

Sheep

Sheeps are multi-purpose animals. They are kept on households as pets and as a domestic livestock for their wool and meat. They are also raised for the milk and fleece. They are one of the earliest animals being domesticated for purposes. These animals are are herbivores. Their lower jaw has large and strong teeth which bite against a toothless upper jaw. They use their rear teeth in grinding food before swallowing it.During the earlier years of a sheep, they have milk teeth which will eventually be replaced with permanent teeth.

Scientifically called Ovis Aries, Sheeps come in more than 200 breeds. Their highly priced wool is the most widely used animal fiber in the world and harvested using the method called shearing.
A Lamb
Aside from their contribution of meat and wool to mankind, the modern world uses sheep as a model organism for science. Sheep are also used on ancient times as a sacrificial animal for religious rituals.
The height and weight of a sheep depends on the breed of the sheep. Their weight ranges from 45 to 160 kilograms. The male sheep called a Ram is significantly larger than the Ewes or the female sheep. The average life expectancy is of this animal is 12 years. They are also species that reached up to more than 20 years of age.

After the age of 4, a sheep gradually declines its health. They normally lost their front teeth making it harder for them to chew and thus hindering their productivity and declining their health.

Few sheeps can be found in Cebu Zoo on the steep stairs heading to the Bengali Tiger.

Black Ape

The Black Ape is an extremely rare monkey at present day; They known to be the last apes of the old world. With a conservation status listed as critically endangered, they are almost near to be extinct like the dinosaurs of ancient times. Their population trend are decreasing on an alarming rate due to extensive habitat loss and hunting.

Macaca Negra is the scientific name for these primates. They have a skinless face, their coat and other body parts are entirely colored black. Their tail only measures 1 inch in length and a noticeable crest on the top side of their heads which distinguished them from all other primates. The full size adults weighs up to 10 kilograms and measures only 2 feet in height.

Black Apes are commonly found on the Northeastern part of Indonesia particularly in Sulawesi. Their natural habitat are on rainforests with moderate elevation. These monkeys  feed on fruits and insects. They are terrestrial in nature and extremely socializing. They can be found spending time in the ground with other groups most of the time by simply sleeping, searching for food or simply sitting with other monkeys.

A Black ape can mature at the age of 3. They are promiscuous in nature. Males and females mate multiple times with several different partners. A female has a gestation period of about 170 days and usually gives birth to a single offspring.

Civet

Civets are animals having a catlike appearance. They come from the family Viverridaeor the Viverrids which is made up of 30 species of medium-sized animals. They found their habitat on Woodlands, Savanna and on Tropical Rainforest and are commonly found in Africa and in Southeast Asia.

Also known as Toddy cats, the Civet is mostly nocturnal. It love to sleep during the day and fully awake during night time. Full growns can measure as much as 30 inches in length and can weigh up to 5 kilograms. This mammal are generally carnivorous in nature feeding on all variations of animals smaller than their size.

The musky scent which produce musk is the most valuable natural asset about this animal. This is valuable compound used to stabilize fragrance in perfumes which makes them vulnerable to be harvested by humans in the perfume business. Instead of killing the animal, practices like scraping the secretions in the glands of a live animal is preferred today.

An Albino Civet
Aside from their contribution in the perfume industry, Civets are also well known in the world of coffee. Do you know that Civets are also used to process coffee? In the countries of Southeast Asia, Civets are well known to produce the most expensive coffees. One cup of coffee processed by this animal can reach up to $100 dollars!

The process is done when coffee cherries are fed to this animal. The flesh of these cherries are digested inside the stomach of a Civet and the seeds of the coffee cherries are being processed by their stomach enzymes. After having these coffee seeds processed, it is extracted on their dung producing the most expensive coffee known as Kopi Luwak or Dung Cofee which has a great tasting flavor and aroma.

There a various Civets found on Cebu Zoo. You can find Palm Civets, an Albino Civet and a huge Malay Civet.

A Little Something About Boggart The Cebu Zoo Tiger

If you already have gone to Cebu Zoo, the finale animal you want to visit is the Cebu Zoo tiger named Boggart. His cage can be found on the lowermost part of the Zoo. It would take you at least 172 steep stair blocks to finally reach his location. Going down the steep stairs is not the problem, but going back since the almost 45 degree angle steep stairs would let you grasp for air, beg for water or tire your hamstrings.
Boggart The Cebu Zoo Tiger
Boggart

Boggart is a male Bengali Tiger; he is approximately 5 years of age. He was given by a foreigner in the name of Will Woodart who originally owned him until he was 3 years old. This young  and large fellow  of the cat family became a part of  the Cebu City Zoo approximately May of 2009. As our impression of how ferocious tigers are, many haven’t known that Boggart can be touched. Zoo Keepers and Veterinarians always touch Boggart. But this does not mean I suggest you to put your hands inside his cage and call him for a caress.

The Location of the Cage of Boggart in Cebu Zoo.

As you may notice, Boggart is limping and had a noticeable injury on his right rear paw. This wound is caused by the hard wire mesh floor which constantly is in contact with his inborn polio leg. Yes, you hear it. He has inborn polio and since birth this tiger does not walk like other tigers do. Besides, Tiger’s feet are physically made to walk on a flat surface that’s why the non flat surface of the hard wire mesh floor created a gash on his polioed leg. Though, a minor opportunity for the zoo, we will just hope that the management can do something for this in the near future.
Boggart Resting

The Cebu Zoo management is particular about the animal welfare act, so Boggart’s diet does not consists of live meat. Or shall I say live animals. Being an apex predator, and a carnivore in nature, he is discipline to only eat several kilos of cattle meat a day and loves being showered in his cage.

Monitor Lizard

Monitor Lizards are known for their intelligence. Coming from the family Varanidae in the animal kingdom, some species of this lizard can even count. They even can lure a nesting crocodile to catch them while another adult supervises the young ones to feed on the crocodile’s eggs.

Cebu Zoo Monitor Lizard
Komodo Dragon, the largest among the Monitor Lizards.
Monitor Lizards have hundreds of subspecies that varies in sizes and other characteristics. The Komodo Dragon, is the largest among the Monitor Lizards and can measure as much as 10 feet in length. The smallest kind of a monitor lizard can only reach up to only 8 inches in length. The recorded largest monitor lizard is the extinct Megalania which reaches up to 26 feet in length and weighs up to a ton. The megalania was believed to have walk the earth some 40,000 years ago and only fossils and bones served as evidence of its presence.

A Monitor lizard is very active during day. When being alert, they usually erect their heads. In a presence of a predator, they defend themselves by lashing their tails; inflating their neck; hissing loudly ; spreading their rib cage and expanding the top of their body to look bigger to intimidate them.
They also  move sideways opening their mouths wide with their tails on an attack stance when they sense danger.Like snakes, monitor lizards eat their meal whole which includes snails, insects, birds, snakes, fish, other smaller lizards and even small crocodiles on their diet.

A Monitor Lizard male compete and combat with another male during breeding seasons to win a female. Females can lay up to 35 eggs on holes in large trees in forests or on holes of rocks on riverbanks. A female of this reptile will incubate their eggs from 8 to 10 weeks.

Two huge monitor lizards can be found caged in the backyard portion of Cebu Zoo. They are fed with chicken meat.

Burmese Python

The Burmese Python is on the list to be one the largest snakes in the world. An average size of this snake can reach up to 12 feet in length but some rare specimens are reported to have reached as long as 20 feet. This reptile is nocturnal and are rarely seen active during the day. Spends most of the time hiding in holes on rocks, trees and undergrounds.

Scientifically named as Molurus Bivittatus, this snake has vivid skin color of brown with border patterns of light brown and yellow. Albinos are colored white with border patterns of a high contrast yellow. An interesting fact of this reptile is that it can go underwater for half an hour.

Being a carnivore, the Burmese Python feeds usually on rodents, birds and sometimes animals that are proportion to its size. It kills its prey through constriction. A method of wrapping its body on the victim and squeezing it until it dies.
An Albino Burmese Python
Burmese pythons are commonly found in the tropic areas of Asia. Though they found their habitat in marshlands or areas near water, there are also sightings of these snakes in grasslands and rocky foothills.

This reptile breeds mostly in spring time. One characterisic of the Females of this snake is that it takes care for its eggs very well. They wrap their body around the eggs to give sufficient temperature to make it warm. They are known to stay on their nest having a watchful eye on the eggs until it hatches and can lay up to 40 eggs per clutch.

Burmese Pythons in Cebu Zoo can be found on a plastic container where you can get hold of these snakes and have a picture taking.

Reticulated Python

With colossal length and size, believe it or not, the reticulated python snake is one of the least dangerous of all snakes. This reptile is non venomous and considered to be one of the most loved snake among pet lovers. With a recorded length of almost 30 feet, this reptile is considered to be one of the longest snakes of the world.

Scientifically known as the python reticulatus, it got its name from its netlike or reticulated skin color pattern. This species of python is mostly found in Southeast Asian countries.

A close up view of the Reticulated Python in Cebu Zoo.
Best known to be very good swimmers, these snakes are often reported to be seen on sea and other bodies of water where they transfer from one island to another to find a new habitat or colony. Reticulated pythons love to live in rain forests, wetlands or woody areas near a lake or a river.

Small species of these snakes usually eat rats and other small birds. The larger ones have been reported to eat and swallow mammals such as wild pigs, monkeys, large fouls, dogs and cats. Reticulated pythons are ambush predators; they wait on an area for a prey within its attack range, when an unlucky visitor is on its ambush area, it coils it until it dies via constriction. They often swallow their meal whole and can even swallow up to one fourth of its length and as much as their body weight and uses their body acid to digest their food.

A female reticulated python can lay as much as 80 eggs in one nest with an incubation period of nearly three months. Newly hatched can measure up to 2 feet in length.

Philippine Long-tailed Macaque

Cebu Zoo Philippine Long-tailed Macaque

The Philippine long-tailed macaque are endemic species in the Philippines. The Males can reach only up to 26 inches tall and can weigh to more than 8 kilograms. Females are relatively smaller, they only grow up tp 21 inches and weighs only 4 kilograms. A distinctive feature about this primate is the size of its tail. It can reach up to 24 inches long almost equal to their height.

Scientifically named Macaca fascicularis philippensis, Philippine long-tailed Macaques have a light brown coat covering their backs and legs with undersides much lighter. They also have very long whiskers compared to other monkeys. The males have a peculiar large cheek pouches . It is used to store a favorite food to run away to their favorable spot to it alone.

Tracing its origin, the  Philippine long-tailed Macaque orginated in the islands of Visayas and Mindanao. This monkey is also a species of the long-tailed macaques in Southeast Asia which are known to be a crab-eating macaque. This primate found its habitat in mangrove areas near beaches, and will abandon it if occupied with humans or being destroyed. The nearest forest would be their refuge.

With a conservation status of of Not Threatened,Philippine long tailed Macaques are still at large in the wild. A sad fact about fatalities of the Philippine long-tailed macaque are road accidents - being run by trucks and buses; electrocuted on climbing on high-tensioned wires; and worse, being stoned.

Gestation period for this monkeys would take around 170 to 190 days. The females would gives birth to one infant which they will nurture until it can be totally independent. The group members will treat the infants with care and rush to their defence when threatened since other monkeys not on the group will kill infants not their own.
